Tai Chi is often simply regarded as a form of gentle, therapeutic, meditation exercise, which involves the flowing sequence of movements that gently exercise the joints and muscles.  However when Tai Chi Chuan is taught in its full form, as it is at North Berwick Sports Centre, you can discover the much more fascinating and multi-faceted side of this ancient Chinese martial art.

Tai Chi Chuan, meaning “Supreme Ultimate Fist”, is based on the concept of Yin and Yang and the principle of using softness to overcome strength.  The techniques of “hand form” movements, (which are generally recognised as Tai Chi) are only the initial stage of Tai Chi Chuan.  The movements of the form are designed to introduce the martial techniques of Tai Chi Chuan.

The Tai Chi Chuan classes on offer at North Berwick Sports Centre, develop the art further by teaching “pushing hands”, a partner exercise designed to develop sensitivity and softness.  The object of this technique is to discover how to deal with being pushed without becoming tense or using strength, and subsequently to deliver pushes to unbalance your partner, again without using muscular strength.  This specific aspect of Tai Chi Chuan provides the basis for good self defence applications.

When more accomplished in Tai Chi hand forms, you can move on to learn another aspect of Tai Chi Chuan, the three “weapon forms”.  Traditionally it is said that the practice of the sabre strengthens resolve, the practice of the spear increases wisdom and the practice of the sword nourishes the chi.

Instructor Chris Adie remarked, “many people take up Tai Chi for the health benefits, however they soon discover that it can not only improve general health and fitness, but also develop physical coordination, balance, a deeper sense of relaxation and many people gain greater confidence due to the self-defence aspects of the art.

Often Tai Chi is thought of as a form of exercise for persons in their senior years, but it can be a practiced for both its therapeutic value and as a challenging, but rewarding martial art for both men and women from age 16 upwards.”

Anne Johnston, who attends the class at North Berwick commented, “Tai Chi Chuan is not only good for my fitness levels, it’s also great fun.  It’s the martial art aspect of the class that I enjoy most because it’s so different and unexpected from the usual Tai Chi classes around.”

If you’re looking for an alternative method of keeping active this new year, why not discover Tai Chi Chaun.   Classes take place at North Berwick Sports Centre weekly on Sunday between 10:30am – 12:30pm.  Prices are £5.25 for adults, £4.00 for concessions.
