Eight-year-old Rosie Maguire has won the East Lothian Council Swimposter competition. Rosie, who is in Primary 4B at Kings Meadow Primary, designed a poster that says ‘Swim and the world is yours’. The poster competition was initiated by Head of Education Maureen Jobson to raise awareness of the importance of children learning to swim. The competition also lays emphasis on the importance of East Lothian Council’s s swimming programme in the primary Physical Education curriculum. The Children in Primary 4 have a block of 10 consecutive swimming lessons from one of the Primary PE Swim Specialists.
The competition was open to all children in Primary 4-7 and there are cluster winners and runners-up who will receive prizes of swim goody bags. Rosie’s winning poster is to be professionally printed and used across the county to promote the benefit of taking part in swimming activities
Primary PE Swimming Specialist Catherine Paterson, who helped to coordinate the competition, says:
‘Swimming is a very important part of the Primary PE curriculum because it is a skill for life – and it can be a life-saving skill. Being able to swim is a great way of keeping fit and healthy and also allows lifelong participation in a wide variety of other fun watersports.’
